You may have heard the term "all-foods-fit" on social media or somewhere along your health journey. This phrase means exactly what it sounds like -- all foods CAN fit into a healthy lifestyle!
Meaning, that although some foods are often referred to as "junk," or "treats," or only reserved for "special occasions," they do not need to be viewed in this way. When we hold foods up on a pedestal, or strictly limit them due to their nutrient value - this can lead to eventual overeating of the food once you allow yourself permission to have it. Allowing all foods to fit in your normal dietary routine, without severely restricting them, will often actually lead to better health outcomes and an overall better relationship with food and your body.
There are many people on social media claiming to be health experts that like to claim that certain foods are toxic or elicit fear regarding certain ingredients, and made strong claims that such foods should NEVER be consumed. Anyone who advises that certain foods be completely avoided without providing strong evidence as to why - can be safely ignored.
The idea of all foods fit does not claim that all foods are equal in terms of nutrient and energy density. It simply removes the moral value often associated with certain foods. And it indicates that although some foods may be more calorically and/or nutrient dense than others, this does not mean that they cannot "fit" into an overall healthy dietary pattern.
Are you someone who has certain foods that are "off limits?" Or do you find yourself eating way more than intended once you finally allow yourself one of your "off limits" foods? It may be time to start working on healing your relationship with food. Adopting an all-foods-fit mindset when it comes to nutrition can be freeing! It allows you to incorporate all of your favorite foods, guilt free.
