5 Tips On How NOT To Be An "Almond Mom"

If you're unsure what an 'Almond Mom' is, make sure to check out my post 'What is an Almond Mom?' first. Now, let's dive into five essential tips to avoid becoming one.

Here are five tips on how to avoid being an “Almond Mom:”

  1. Quit the negative body talk!

    • When children hear you speak negatively about your body, they learn to internalize those thoughts.

    • They learn by example, so don't talk to yourself in a manner you wouldn't want your child to use when speaking to themselves!

  2. Eat the same foods as your children

    • Kids learn by example. Show them that a healthy diet includes both nourishment and enjoyment.

    • Share a bowl of ice cream on a summer night or have mac & cheese for lunch.

    • Avoid making comments like 'I could never eat that,' as children internalize these messages.

    • The bottom line is, do not model dieting behaviors. Show your children that all foods can fit into a healthy life.

  3. Do not limit your child's food intake

    • This means you should not restrict your children from eating. Trust them when they tell you that they are hungry.

    • Children are growing, and it is normal for them to be hungry. This is a sign they are listening to their hunger cues - you should listen too!

  4. Do not make food a reward

    • Avoid saying things like 'Finish your vegetables to get a cookie' or 'You can have dessert only if you finish your homework.' This labels treats as special and reinforces unhealthy food relationships.

  5. Be mindful of the exercise you encourage

    • Encourage age-appropriate exercise like playing outside or team sports.

    • Help your child find fun activities that make them feel good, not just burn calories.
